Dr. Boller graduated from veterinary school at the University of Zurich, Switzerland in 1997; he then practiced both large and small animal medicine in private practice followed by a doctoral thesis and a veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia residency at the University of Zurich, both completed in 2002. After a lecturership at Penn Vet, he was awarded a translational research fellowship at Penn’s Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) leading to a Masters in Translational Research degree in 2010. In addition to his clinical and teaching activity at Penn Vet, Dr. Boller was also the medical director of the Translational Resuscitation ICU at Penn’s Center for Resuscitation Science (CRS) that combined veterinarians, human doctors, nurses, engineers and others to achieve advancement in resuscitation. He developed animal models in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including emergency cardiopulmonary bypass. He serves as a member of the scientific committee of ACVECC and as co-chair of the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) initiative which generated the first evidence based consensus guidelines on veterinary CPR published in June 2012. The RECOVER roadmap includes uniform reporting guidelines for pet CPR and the creation of international pet CPR registry. Manuel’s research interests include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, post-resuscitation disease, extracorporeal life support and the effects the above scenarios exert on endothelial integrity. Manuel joined the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Veterinary Science, as a senior lecturer in veterinary emergency and critical care in July 2012.
