General Overview

The program of the Internal Medicine Course is created to give the chance to participants to deepen their knowledge in medical sciences of companion animals. The courses will be at an advanced level, in case-oriented and problem-solving approaches; each week will focus on a specific “discipline” of small animal internal medicine in order to give to attending veterinarians basic as well as advanced competences in most important topics of the daily practice. By attending to all courses, the participants are expected to achieve an adequate level of skills to be able to solve problems in the most important medical sciences, including all disciplines that are closely interconnected to internal medicine, such as oncology, cardiology, neurology and intensive care.

The complete training programme consists of seven periods of 5 days each; the entire programme will be given from 2018 to 2022. International guidelines and most recent scientific literature will be discussed in lectures, cases will be given to participants in practical sessions; attending vets will be fully responsible to find adequate management plans and reach the diagnosis in practical sessions. Theoretical and practical sessions will allow participants to achieve a level of knowledge and expertise that capacitate them to manage medical cases.

Language

All modules will be held in China in English language with translation in Chinese.

Course Overview

The present module of the Internal Medicine Course is devised to give the practitioner a throughout understanding of small animal endocrinology. Major topics include diabetes mellitus, hyper- and hypothyroidism, hyper- and hypoadrenocorticism, pheochromocytoma and insulinoma in dogs and cats, from the perspective of the internist, oncologist, cardiologist, neurologist and intensive care specialist. Each of these diseases may represent a diagnostic challenge; for many of them treatment decisions are difficult and for some they need to be made as soon as possible in order to save the pet’s life. Quality of life and communication with the owner represent also a concern. The veterinarian has a central role in every aspect of the disease. Hence, the module on small animal endocrinology aims to increase the knowledge of each participant in order to allow solving common and less common diseases of the endocrine system.

Besides theoretical lectures, during each afternoon the module includes hands-on sessions with multidisciplinary clinical cases. The participant is requested to give is advices after having discussed the differential diagnoses; in addition, the participant needs to suggest the therapeutic choices. The continuous dialogue with experienced lecturers, in a friendly atmosphere, will allow the participant to learn and practice at the same time.

Objectives

At the end of this module, the participant will be able to:

  • diagnose frequent and less frequent endocrine diseases of dogs and cats;
  • identify the differential diagnoses for each clinical and laboratory abnormality pertaining to the endocrine system;
  • select the most appropriate treatment modality for each endocrine disease;
  • identify any potential side effect of each treatment;
  • recognize the prognostic factors of each endocrine disease;
  • communicate to the owner the most relevant aspects of the endocrine diseases;
  • have a broaden knowledge in medical sciences interconnected with internal medicine.

Prerequisite

The module provides most up to date knowledge about endocrine diseases of dogs and cats. The combination of theoretical and hands-on sessions will advance the knowledge of each participant in medical subjects. More and less experienced veterinarians are expected to benefit from this module.
