General Overview
Cancer is one of the most common and challenging diseases encountered in feline practice. Cats with weight loss, chronic nasal disease, mammary tumours, lymphoma, skin masses or unexplained effusions are seen every day, yet many veterinarians feel less confident approaching cancer in cats than in dogs.
The reason is simple: cats are not small dogs. Feline tumours often differ substantially in their biology, clinical behaviour, prognosis and treatment options. At the same time, feline oncology frequently receives less attention than canine oncology in continuing education.
This course is designed to provide a practical roadmap for managing the feline cancer patient. Starting with common clinical presentations, participants will learn how to approach diagnosis, select appropriate staging tests, interpret results, discuss prognosis with owners and formulate realistic treatment plans.
A major focus is placed on clinical decision-making and case management in everyday practice. What can I do myself? When should I refer? What information does the owner need to make a good decision? Which diagnostic tests are truly helpful, and which are unlikely to change management?
Through interactive case discussions, practical cytology sessions and evidence-based lectures, participants will develop confidence in managing the most common feline tumours, including lymphoma, mammary tumours, skin tumours, respiratory tumours and gastrointestinal cancers.
Importantly, the value of this course does not depend on access to advanced oncology infrastructure. Whether working in a referral centre or a general practice with basic laboratory, radiography and ultrasound capabilities, participants will leave with practical tools that can be applied immediately in clinical practice. The majority of cancers in cats encountered in daily practice do not require CT examinations.
The course is suitable for both veterinarians new to oncology and experienced feline practitioners wishing to deepen their understanding of feline cancer and stay current with modern oncology concepts and treatment options.
While major feline tumours are also discussed within the Oncology I–III programme, this module provides a dedicated and significantly more detailed exploration of feline oncology.
ESAVS oncology is a comprehensive study program consisting of currently 6 one-week modules. After completing feline oncology, students interested in oncology are encouraged to attend Oncology I.
ESAVS oncology is a comprehensive study program consisting of currently 5 one-week modules. Further, there are 2 additional stand-alone and/or intensive courses on specific topics available (Feline Oncology & Master Class in Medical Oncology (in planning)) that can also be attended alone and independently of the other 5 modules.
